The biggest risk you can take in life is to take none at all

I am delighted to share the news that I have taken on the role of Head of Communications & PR at the International University Sports Federation, FISU. I love working in sport, especially youth sport, and I am immensely grateful that my drive and commitment has been recognised.

Without doubt I am lucky to be where I am, but it is not luck alone. Three years ago, I risked it all – a high flying career, a ‘settled’ life in a beautiful home, extended family and lifelong friends – to follow my passion and chase crazy dreams.

In August 2017, I left everything I knew, rolled up my life into two bags and moved from New Delhi, India to Lausanne, Switzerland. At the time I left, I was co-anchoring the No.1 English news programme in the country, the Newshour on Times Now.

My nightly viewership was over a million and my career was at its peak. But every night, as I prepared my vocal chords for the feisty political debates that followed, I felt empty. It had been years since I felt the kind of passion that had first inspired my fledgling steps into the world of journalism. The difference was that I had started this career for the love of sport, as a sports journalist. What I was missing at the height of my success and fame, was simple: sport.

For many years, I quietly held onto a dream, even as my career was taking off, to some day work in international sport in what is known as the Olympic Capital – the beautiful lakeside town of Lausanne. I wanted to work in a truly global space. I wanted to work in youth sport.

Finally, I decided that life is too short for regrets, so pushing forty and with a husband and two kids in tow, I moved my life to Lausanne with absolutely no certainty of what would happen. As you can imagine, the naysayers painted all kinds of depressing and pessimistic pictures for me. Many genuinely thought I had gone crazy. Thankfully, those who mattered most believed in me.

All I knew then, was that I wanted to rekindle my passion and go back to working in sport, on a global scale. Where I am today is perfect in so many ways.

I embark on this new chapter with gratitude and humility, in a position that excites me and piques my creativity. Today, I can say one thing with absolute conviction: the biggest risk you can take in life is to take none at all.
